Social Media for Journalists: Getting the most out of many options for spreading news, tapping sources

By Selma Khenissi

Kassy Cho, founder and editor-in-chief of the Instagram-based Almost, talked with the SPJ DC Pro Chapter and guests online on March 24, 2022, about how social media can be a professional asset for you while you grow in the journalism profession. Her confident and friendly demeanor made for a pleasant and informative conversation.

Kassy’s tips on social media were abundant, which offered everyone at the virtual event plenty of options to choose from to improve not only their use of social media, but also to bolster individual presences.

As journalists, it is easy to solely focus on the stories we produce, but Kassy reminded everyone that we need to showcase our human sides on social media as well. That doesn’t mean that good content should go by the wayside. Good content requires some human spark as well.

An important point Kassy raised is the importance of consistency in posting. Disappearing from social media for long periods of time wouldn’t be wise, no matter how much is going on in one’s life, she cautioned. The only exception to that principle would be if trolls have made social media life a living hell.
