THE DC SPJ Pro Chapter Board is passing this information along to you for your consideration. It was sent to us by the organizers of the event:

Now in its sixth year, SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Film Festival is an eight-day international festival held June 16-23, 2008 in Silver Spring. SILVERDOCS celebrates the creative vision of independent filmmakers and the power of documentary to expand our world-view and enhance our understanding of the world around.

GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON (USA, 2007, 118min, Dir. Alex Gibney) cuts through the larger-than-life mythology of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson to present an intimate, illuminating and highly entertaining look at the man who chronicles and personified the rebellious spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. The film screens on Wednesday, June 18 at 9:30pm and will be followed by a Q&A with Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (ENRON:THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM, TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE) For more information, see: http://silverdocs.com/festival/films/2008/gonzo-life-and-work-dr-hunter-s-thompson/

Another film that may be of interest to the DC Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is:

LETTER TO ANNA (Switzerland, 2008, 83min, Dir. Eric Bergkraut) about the 2006 assassination of fearless Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who reported on the Moscow-supported atrocities against Chechen civilians. The film screens on Saturday, June 21 at 11:45am and Sunday June 22, at 1:30pm. Following the screening on Saturday, there will be a panel discussion with the filmmaker Eric Bergkraut, Maura Reynolds (Los Angeles Times Correspondent who knew Anna), moderated by Kevin Klose (President of NPR and former Moscow correspondent for The Washington Post).
