WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington, D.C., Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held its annual Hall of Fame and Dateline Awards dinner at the National Press Club on Tuesday, June 9 inducting three journalists into its Hall of Fame, honoring its Distinguished Service Award recipient, and announcing the recipients of its 2026 Dateline Awards for journalism excellence. Kojo Nnamdi, host of Public Radio’s Politics Hour, presided as the night’s master of ceremonies.
The SPJ-DC Chapter also announced the full list of winners and finalists in the Dateline Awards across 64 categories, and honored its Hall of Fame inductees AP national science writer Seth Borenstein, author and co-owner of the Washington Blade Kevin Naff, and author and NPR investigative correspondent Cheryl W. Thompson. The Distinguished Service Award, recognizing a journalists’ commitment to the pursuit of excellence in the profession, went to Karen Attiah.
“Our chapter is marking its 90th birthday this year. We have survived challenging times before, but this year, with its significant turmoil and staff cuts at the Washington Post and the loss of federal funds prompting layoffs at NPR, along with daily jibes from the White House, may be one of the most difficult. And yet we are still here,” said SPJ-DC board president Celia Wexler.
Wexler added that the legacy of the Dateline Awards reaches back to the 1950s, as a way of recognizing and honoring “the DMV’s best and brightest, the people who strive to do their jobs, even when facing harassment, and whose work demonstrates the importance of a free press to a functioning democracy.”
A special award – the Robert D.G. Lewis Watchdog Award – is presented each year to an entry – in any category – that best exemplifies journalism aimed at protecting the public from abuses by those who would betray the public trust. The award comes with a prize of $1,000. The award is named in honor of the late Robert D.G. Lewis of Newhouse Newspapers, who was an SPJ national president as well as chairman of its Freedom of Information Committee.
The Watchdog award this year went to Reuters Staff, for their investigative journalism work. Their entry, “The Revenge of Donald Trump,” for Reuters, is an account of how the Executive Branch and presidential administration have weaponized state power.
The judges praised the way this reporting serves as an “authoritative account of how in his second term Trump has brazenly, some alleged illegally, weaponized government powers and agencies to exact revenge on perceived enemies, and anyone who disagrees with him.”
