Know any deserving journalism students? Tell them to apply for local SDX scholarship

The scholarship application process is well underway for the SDX Foundation of Washington, D.C., our SPJ-DC chapter’s education arm (a 501(c)3 private foundation). The deadline for applications is Jan. 24. Full information is on the www.sdxdc.org website.

Chapter members: You are encouraged to let qualified undergraduate journalism students at D.C.-area colleges and universities know about the opportunity to apply. Foundation board member Maura Judkis, herself a past SDX Foundation scholarship awardee, is spearheading the process this year.

During the foundation’s semi-annual board meeting in November, she reported that Scholarship Committee members have been working to increase the number of applicants, as recent years have produced fewer and fewer applicants for the scholarships, which for the coming cycle will amount to up to $24,000, for up to 6 scholarships at $4,000 each. There was a lengthy discussion of moving from paper to online application submissions. Judkis will set up a Web address using the foundation’s existing Web presence so that applicants can submit some of the information online.

Letters of recommendation and transcripts will still be received at SDX Foundation of Washington, D.C., c/o SPJ DC Pro Chapter, PO Box 19555, Washington, DC 20036. Assisting Judkis with the SDX website — www.sdxdc.org — is Howard University graduate Letese Clark, who works at WNEW Radio.
