Google News training May 18 webinar: Searching for News During COVID-19

Google is essential to nearly every online user, but how can one graduate from being an everyday user to a power user of the search engine?

Join the Society of Professional Journalists Washington, D.C., Pro Chapter and other SPJ chapter in Region 2 on Monday, May 18, for a free virtual workshop on using Google tools and techniques that are especially beneficial for news professionals and those who follow the news.

What: Google News training
When: Monday, May 18, 2020
Where: online (when you sign up, you’ll get the details sent to you)
What time: 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. EDT
QUESTIONS: spjdcchapter@gmail.com

During this hands-on workshop, we’ll take a deep dive into a handful of free Google Tools, including Google Scholar and YouTube. The focus will be on COVID-19, to assist you in understanding the virus that causes the disease and issues surrounding the pandemic — useful information, because even if you aren’t reporting on the public health crisis itself, some aspect of it affects your subject matter of coverage.

You will come away with strategies to help research accurately and efficiently, as well as training in tools that will help you tell more interactive stories.

Be sure you have a free Google/Gmail account set up before the workshop, and you’ll come away with confidence and experience in Google’s tools for journalists.

This free workshop is provided as part of a joint initiative between the Society of Professional Journalists and the Google News Initiative. Stay-at-home orders waylaid an in-person version of this training planned for March, sponsored by DC Pro, and a similar session was planned for the Region 2 conference in Annapolis, Maryland, that had to be canceled — and the pandemic drove the focus to now be on COVID-19.

This event is open to the public and there is no charge to attend but all attendees must register. Register on Eventbrite here. *

* During your registration on Eventbrite, you will also find a link to a registration for the webinar connection on Zoom. Register there as well.
