CALL TO ORDER

First order of business: Nomination/election of members to fill vacancies on board: Carl Ericson (one-year term); Ann Augherton (one-year term); Christ Gunty (filling remaining year on Bill McCloskey’s term); swearing-in of new board members

MINUTES OF June 3 meeting

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (Elizabeth)

  • Set dates of board meetings for 2013-2014; usually first Monday of the month (with some exceptions, like Labor Day) at National Press Club.
  • Brief report on presentation by Amy Mitchell, acting director of the Pew Research Project for Excellence in Journalism. Topic: The rise of mobile news consumers: habits and what it means for media industry.

PROGRAMS (VPathy Burns, Minal Bopaiah)

  • Events calendar (and do we need an events committee?) for the upcoming year.
  • Three possible events Covering Mental Illness; a training/fundraiser for RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues, http://risctraining.org); and a monthly happy hour.
  • July 18 diversity mixer at NBC4, organized by Brandon Benavides of NAHJ; also invite from Brandon for our chapter to be part of a job fair in the fall. (Asher)
  • Fall workshop for high school newspaper advisers.

TREASURER (Amy Fickling)

  • Treasurer’s report; copies of most recent bank statements for board review.
  • Need approval of a couple non-receipted expenses from contest coordinator Joel Whitaker.

OLD BUSINESS

  • Finalize list of SPJ-DC chapter’s SIX delegates to Anaheim convention; we’ll also choose some alternates. (Julie has list from last meeting). July 31 is deadline to submit to national SPJ office.)

NEW BUSINESS

  • Setting up committee structure: for programs, communications, membership.
  • Search for new Dateline Awards contest coordinator.
  • Discussion of taking Dateline Awards contest online.
  • Finalizing date for 2014 Dateline Awards dinner (second Tuesday would be June 10) at National Press Club.
  • Need to decide about hosting 2014 Region 2 conference (possibly with the Georgetown University chapter, would probably be April dates)
  • Revamping the Dateline newsletter.
