SPJ’s prestigious national SDX award presentation returns to DC; set for July 20

The SPJ’s prestigious Sigma Delta Chi awards for excellence in journalism in 2011 will be presented in Washington in July. This marks the return of this high-power event to our area.

The ceremony, which brings together top journalists from around the country to collect their awards and share their stories, will be held at the National Press Club on Friday, July 20.

The awards dinner had been held in Washington and then was moved to be part of the Society’s national convention. Efforts to integrate better with the Radio TV Digital News Association convention events at the joint SPJ-RTDNA Excellence in Journalism meeting led Society leaders to give the SDX awards their own exclusive showcase and returned the event to Washington and the Press Club.

The SPJ national board’s executive committee will meet in Washington the following day, Saturday, July 21. Although details of the awards dinner and the executive committee meeting have not been finalized, both are open to all members.

The SPJ-DC chapter leadership will invite national SDX Award winners to speak to chapter members about their accomplishments in a separate professional development event over the weekend.

The chapter is also planning a social event with the national officers while they are in town that weekend, perhaps in conjunction with a Washington Nationals baseball game.

Please hold the dates on your calendar.
