The deadly Hamas attacks in Israel on Saturday that resulted in scores of deaths and triggered a large-scale military response created another urgent crisis for journalists to report on live — from those hiding from bombs on the frontlines to fact checkers working from home to verify the numerous materials shared on social media.
On our next Dow Jones webinar, we will be discussing this major development with the goal of helping journalists better cover the crisis and other similar crises. I will be hosting multimedia journalist Michael Lipin, who covers international affairs as a Voice of America bridge editor. Based in Washington, Lipin produces and hosts VOA’s weekly podcast, Flashpoint Iran. He also has done multiple assignments in Israel, interviewing senior political and military figures about Israel-Iran tensions and covering Israel’s April 2019 Knesset election and the 2017 and 2018 visits of U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to Jerusalem, Israel’s U.S.-recognized capital.
We will also be joined by Steven Youngblood, who is the founding director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at Park University in Parkville, Missouri, U.S. where he is a communications and peace studies professor. He has organized and taught peace journalism seminars and workshops in 44 countries/territories. He also served as a U.S. State Department Senior Subject Specialist in Ethiopia in 2018.
Youngblood is the author of “Peace Journalism Principles and Practices” and “Professor Komagum.” He edits “The Peace Journalist” magazine, and writes and produces the “Peace Journalism Insights” blog. He has been recognized for his contributions to world peace by the U.S. State Department, Rotary International, and the World Forum for Peace, which named him a Luxembourg Peace Prize laureate for 2020-21.
