New York Times journalist Amy Padnani, who is an editor on the Obituaries desk and creator of Overlooked, will discuss with the DC Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists how the Overlooked project began, on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, starting at 6:30 p.m.
To tell the story about Overlooked, she will talk about her personal background, which helped motivate her to cover the deaths of persons who weren’t originally mentioned in The New York Times but who deserved recognition. Padnani will give us a behind-the-scenes look at The New York Times Obituaries desk and discuss the work in publishing obituaries in journalism.

The event will be in a Q&A format, with Amy Padnani first being interviewed by event moderator Selma Khenissi, a DC Pro Chapter board member and organizer of the program. Then there will follow an opportunity for the audience to ask Padnani questions during Q&A.
Co-hosts for the event are Mindspace and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism Washington program.
