During the tenure of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey is now among the top jailers of journalists in the world. According to the Turkish Journalists’ Syndicate, 67 journalists are currently in jail. Government censorship is dramatically on the rise, blocking hundreds of websites and looking to increase its control over Internet access in the country.

Voice of America’s new documentary, “Turkey: Breaking the Silence” profiles citizens, journalists, and activists whose stories help explain the forces driving media suppression. The film reveals how deep divisions in Turkish society and politics, combined with autocratic power, have evolved to repress critical news coverage and stifle free speech.

Join us as we discuss the threats to press freedom and journalists’ independence with Beth Mendelson, Executive Producer of VOA documentary of Turkey: Breaking the Silence.
