SPJ President Nicole DeCriscio spoke out against the closing of Novaya Gazeta, the last independent news outlet in Russia.
“Any newspaper closure is a sad occurrence, but the closure of Novaya Gazeta is the intended result of years of pressure on independent journalism. Censorship, intimidation and financial isolation are not separate incidents,” DeCriscio said. “Together, these actions act as a strategy for silencing scrutiny. That is the chilling effect of targeted campaigns against the press. The actions that created it deserve unequivocal condemnation as we stand with the journalists who refused to abandon the truth.”
