Join us April 30 for something different — "Broken Records," a documentary by SPJ members about Arab hip-hop.
Here is a description from Shannon Farhoud, one of the filmmakers:
"The documentary is about Arab Artists and their cultivation of western art into modern Arab culture. It's about hip-hop and western culture influencing and creating a new Arab culture.
"Music and politics often go hand in hand, and as pro-democracy revolutions spread throughout the Arab world, one sound in particular is echoing the hopes, dreams, and frustrations of the people. Arab hip-hop, once relegated to the sidelines, has emerged as the soundtrack of the resistance.
"The documentary feature two globally recognized, artists Omar Offendum and the Narcicyst."
Farhoud and the other two filmmakers — Rana Khaled and Ashlene Ramadan — are members of the new Northwestern University SPJ chapter in Qatar. They will talk about the film after it is shown.
Join us for the screening — April 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., 801 K St. NW at Mt. Vernon Square, Washington, D.C.
For more details, email Farhoud or visit the event Facebook page.
