From the convention: An unexpected learning opportunity

The recent SPJ convention in Las Vegas offered a range of learning opportunities for attendees. One of the most unusual occurred at the opening-night reception. Organizers had arranged for retired dealers at Planet Hollywood, the convention hotel, to instruct anyone interested in the finer points of card games. The best part was that it was a no-risk deal — the chips were free.

Frank Miller, who has been dealing for more than four decades, warmed up his table with a few hands of blackjack. He then switched to Texas hold ‘em, the popular poker game in many televised tournaments.

After a few hands, D.C. Pro board member Paul Byers had accumulated a large stack of chips.

When he dropped out, Region 2 Director Brian Eckert picked up the pace and was soon the big winner.

Those who played agreed it was a good way to learn some new skills. Best of all, everyone walked away winners, which isn’t always the case in Las Vegas.
