From our neighbor, the Virginia Pro SPJ Chapter:
The Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism will host a free webinar on using FOIA requests to access public records on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 9 a.m.
Here is the description of the event: “Powerful investigative journalism sometimes involves access to records government officials don’t want you to have. But public records are supposed to be exactly that – public. Getting them is not always as easy as filling out a request. Human error, technological limitations, a lack of transparency or lack of records are just some of the challenges that prevent journalists from accessing them.”
Hear from Kate Doyle from the National Security Archive, Marisa Kwiatkowski from USA Today, and Mike Morisy from MuckRock about their successes, challenges, detours, and strategies for accessing public records at this special CCIJ Professional Learning session.
