The World of Jere Longman

Longman has written about sexual and psychological abuse of young female athletes in various sports during the span of his career, including fencing and synchronized swimming just this year. He has also written about sports and climate change in the wake of Hurricane Ida and plans to do so again in the near future.

Longman notes that he has reported from more than 50 countries, so has plenty of anecdotes and stories to share with our community.

Jeré Longman has been a sports reporter for The New York Times since October 1993, covering a variety of international sports, primarily those of the Olympics.

Prior to working at The Times, Mr. Longman covered the Philadelphia Eagles and the 76ers at the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1982 to 1993. He also worked as a general assignment sportswriter for the paper. From 1977 to 1982, he served as a general assignment reporter and sports writer as well as a school district beat reporter at the Dallas Times Herald. He wrote about high school and college sports at the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. from 1976 to 1977.

Mr. Longman is the author of “The Girls of Summer,” a book about the United States soccer team that won the 1999 Women’s World Cup. He also wrote “Among the Heroes,” which is about United Flight 93 that was hijacked on Sept. 11 and crashed in Pennsylvania after the passengers and crew rebelled against the hijackers. This book became a New York Times bestseller.

Mr. Longman was born in Coronado, Calif., on July 17, 1954, and grew up in Eunice, La. He received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana State University in 1976.
