The SPJ celebrated its 100th anniversary last week at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
DePauw is where the SPJ started in 1909 as a fraternity of journalism students, the Sigma Delta Chi — SDX.
Over the years the organization changed from a fraternity to a professional association. It even allowed women into its ranks — well it was a fraternity for a long time. And it eventually changed its name to the Society of Professional Journalists.
The SDX name is kept for annual national awards for best in journalism as well as the SPJ charitable foundation.
At the 100th anniversary celebration, Jane Pauley spoke about journalism, its past and its future.
