Hal Bruno

During his 50 years in journalism, Hal Bruno has covered everything from sports to police beat, international affairs, investigations and national politics, including every presidential election from 1960 through 2004.
For 19 years, Bruno was Political Director of ABC News and the host of Hal Bruno’s Washington, a weekly radio interview program.
Bruno joined ABC in 1978 after 18 years with Newsweek magazine, where he was a reporter, bureau chief, News Editor, Chief Political Correspondent and part of the Watergate investigative team.
He has appeared frequently on election debate panels and served as moderator of the 1992 vice-presidential debate.
Bruno began his journalism career as a student sportswriter at the University of Illinois.
After graduation and work at local newspapers in Illinois, he served as an Army intelligence officer during the Korean War. He returned to journalism as a police reporter for the Chicago City News Bureau and then joined the Chicago American in 1954. His assignments ranged from crime and social problems in Chicago to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Cuban revolution.
In 1956 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to India, where he studied the Indian press and filed stories for the International News Service.
Bruno is also a nationally recognized authority on fire safety. He writes a monthly column for Firehouse magazine and was active as a volunteer firefighter for 40 years.
