Chapter member provides unique perspective on President Jimmy Carter

President Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 Dec. 29. Amid all the reviews of his term in office and public life, one factor comes through strongly: The importance religion played in his life.

Long-time SPJ DC Pro Chapter member Christi Harlan recently published a book that looked at this important aspect of Carter’s life in a unique way.

Harlan is a member of the same Baptist church in Washington, D.C., that Carter attended while he was president. During is term in office, Carter also taught Sunday School classes at the church. Harlan used her skills as a journalist and communicator to assemble the recordings and remembrances of Carter’s lessons.

Her book, “Mr. President, the Class is Yours: Jimmy Carter’s Sunday School Lessons in Washington, D.C.,” came out in mid-2024.

She talked with DC Pro Chapter Treasurer Dan Kubiske about this book and a sequel, “Normal Lives,” on New Year’s Day 2025.
