Dateline Awards 2022 finalists & winners

 Published Date: June 14, 2022

Awards were presented for excellence in TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, newsletter/trade publication, and online journalism, encompassing breaking news, business writing, commentary, photography, and more. All work was published or broadcast in 2021.

The judging for the contest was conducted by members of the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter in a judging exchange with SPJ DC Pro.

SPECIAL AWARD: Robert D.G. Lewis Watchdog Award

Each year a special award, the Robert D.G. Lewis Watchdog Award, is presented to a journalist or group in any award classification whose entry best exemplifies journalism aimed at protecting the public from abuses by those who would betray the public trust. The award comes with a $1,000 prize.

The winners of the 2022 Robert D.G. Lewis Watchdog Award are Megan Cloherty and Jack Moore of WTOP for their investigation into the Washington D.C.’s Department of Forensics. Their reporting uncovered misattributed evidence, deliberately-concealed findings from an inspector general’s report and complaints about the D.C. crime lab’s leadership that went unheeded.
