COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED FOR ASPIRING JOURNALISTS

The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation of Washington, D.C. (SDXDC) has announced its annual journalism scholarship program, adding changes designed to assist students taking classes remotely during the pandemic.

For the 2021-22 academic year, the foundation plans to bundle its annual financial assistance with digital equipment students need to attend classes online and complete digital assignments during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This innovative shift in our longstanding program is aimed at helping students meet the myriad challenges facing them and become competent, ethical, effective journalists, ” SDXDC President Reginald Stuart said. “We are fortunate to play a meaningful role,” he added, echoing foundation colleagues.

The foundation will be awarding up to four $2,500 scholarships to students who demonstrate a financial need for the next academic year. Recipients will have the option of taking up to $900 of the award in digital equipment – a laptop, video camera, tripod, microphone, headphones, lights or light stands.

Anyone interested can find more details and a scholarship application form at the foundation’s website — sdxdc.org. The deadline for applying is March 15. Successful applicants will be interviewed in April. An announcement of scholarship recipients is expected in early May.

The scholarships are aimed at students who will be juniors or seniors in the fall semester of 2021. Scholarship recipients also will be offered free mentoring by veteran journalists affiliated with SDXDC.

Students must demonstrate a strong commitment to pursuing journalism as their chosen profession upon graduation. They must attend a school in D.C., or in nearby Maryland or Virginia suburbs.

The foundation was created in 1962 as the nonprofit, education arm of the Washington, D.C., Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the nation’s oldest and largest organization of journalists founded as Sigma Delta Chi.

The foundation has awarded more than 200 scholarships to students with a demonstrated interest in journalism attending colleges and universities in the D.C. area.
