The Story Behind The Winning Story – Donna L Cole

 Published Date: June 19, 2020

We asked winners in the Dateline Awards to tell us about their story.

RADIO    Investigative Journalism

Donna L. Cole, WNAV News, “The Poisoning of Bald Eagles on Maryland’s Eastern Shore – the History of a Dirty Little Secret”

I’ve been working on stories about the poisoning of bald eagles on Maryland’s Eastern Shore since 2016. When I received the Dateline Award for Excellence in Local Journalism/Investigative Journalism (radio) last year at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in the city where I was born, where investigative journalism brought down a president and where investigative journalists continue to do amazingly powerful work, I was shocked. I was surrounded by some of the best journalists in the world. And though the awards were virtual this year, to hear some of the names of the finalists and winners, it was no less exciting. I’m incredibly honored for this to happen, not once, but now two years in a row for a story that has meant so much to me.

Thank you and my congratulations to the other winners and finalists.
