Story Behind The Winning Story – Susan Ferriss

 Published Date: June 20, 2020

Susan Ferriss at The Center for Public Integrity, “Immigration Decoded” blog won a Dateline Award in the category All Divisions/Blog. Here are her comments on her work.

Our Immigration Decoded blog gives readers a chance to submit questions to us. This gives us a chance to provide deeper context for issues that keep surfacing in breaking news events and in political rhetoric.

One reader inspired us to do a post when she asked us for “evidence-based facts, not just statements, about how undocumented people benefit the U.S. economy.” For another post, we met up with U.S. citizens at the U.S. Capitol who were lobbying members of Congress. They’re unable to sponsor their spouses for legal status because of an obscure law approved in 1996.

The 2019 El Paso, Texas, massacre inspired a blog post about immigrant bashing, and how for 25 years politicians and media personalities have fueled scapegoating of Latino immigrants
