About 20 people gathered at Marymount University in Arlington as D.C. Pro board member Steve Taylor and TBD.com's Steve Buttry led a discussion of journalism ethics on Jan. 22.
Taylor, the moderator, and Buttry, our guest panelist, touched on multiple angles of credibility and integrity in news coverage, sparking a lively discussion.
One point of contention was the role of Facebook as a journalistic tool and as a marketing vehicle.
This was the second in a three-part journalism ethics series planned by the D.C. Pro chapter.
D.C. Pro is one of nine SPJ chapters to get an Sigma Delta Chi Foundation grant for a national series called "The Public and the Press."
The series is intended to inspire discussions between journalists and the public on journalism ethics and why they matter.
Part 1 in the D.C. Pro series was held Nov. 11 at the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington. About 35 people attended.
The D.C. Pro chapter expects to hold part 3 of the series in the spring, probably in Maryland.
