Plans are proceeding nicely for the SPJ Region 2 convention. The event will be held April 8 and 9 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel in Norfolk, Va.
The Virginia Pro chapter will host the regional, which this year has been combined with the Virginia Press Association/AP Advertising and News Conference. Programs and other activities from each organization will be open to members of both.
SPJ-planned programs include “Social Media Ethics,” “College Media-Pro Problems,” “Freelancing, Odd Jobs and Life After Corporate Media” and “50 Ideas in 90 Minutes: Fresh Ideas to Take Back to Your Newsroom.”
There also will be programs on FOIA and on the Civil War sesquicentennial, “Stories Today from 150 Years Ago.”
In addition, “speed dating” sessions will be arranged between freelancers and editors, so those interested should bring their clips.
Bill Adair, editor of Politifact, will be the keynote speaker at the SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards luncheon April 9.
Planned VPA program titles include “Why and How Newspapers Should Embrace the Internet,” “Research and Analysis of Media (RAM),” “InDesign” and “Managing Innovative Ideas.
At another program, “What’s More Important, The Sale or The Story?,” representatives from journalism’s advertising and news sides will present day-in-the-life descriptions of their work and its interaction with the other side.
SPJ members from North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, D.C. and Delaware are invited.
