The D.C. Pro chapter’s board of directions is accepting suggestions for the chapter’s Hall of Fame and for its Distinguished Service in Local Journalism Award. Honoress will be recognized at the Dateline Awards dinner in June 2010.
The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2010.
The criterion for membership in the Hall of Fame is simply this: strong journalism over at least 25 years in Washington. The 2009 inductees were CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer, Public Broadcasting Service correspondent Gwen Ifill, U.S. News & World Report correspondent Kenneth T. Walsh and BNA editor Toby McIntosh.
The 2008 class was Juan Williams of NPR and FOX News, Eleanor Clift of Newsweek, Hal Bruno of ABC News and Patrick McGrath of WTTG-TV.
Among the more than 150 others in the Hall are Jack Anderson, Ben Bradlee, David Brinkley, David Broder, Art Buchwald, Maureen Bunyan, Ann Compton, Sam Donaldson, Seymour Hersh, Terry Hunt, Mark Knoller, Jim Lehrer, Walter Lippmann, Peter Lisagor, Sarah McClendon, Ann McFeatters, Mary McGrory, Roger Mudd, Robert Novak, Gordon Peterson, Diane Rehm, James Reston, William Safire, Helen Thomas, Jim Vance, Judy Woodruff and Bob Woodward.
The Distinguished Service Award goes to someone who has contributed to the development of local journalism, mentored other journalists and/or worked in the community.
In 2009, Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy received the DSA. Previous winners include veteran SPJ activist Bill McCloskey, retired from the AP and BellSouth; columnist Mark Shields; Student Press Law Center Executive Director Mark Goodman; former SPJ national President Reggie Stuart; retired NBC4 writer and producer Tom Simonton, journalism attorney Bob Becker, former Washingtonian editor Jack Limpert and former University of Maryland journalism Dean Reese Cleghorn.
You do not have to be an SPJ member to nominate someone for either award. Please e-mail your suggestions to Steve Taylor at taylorsa@comcast.net.
