Convention Report: Resolution on dangerous work of journalism

Usually, convention delegates vote on both candidates and resolutions (and bylaw changes, if there are any) at the final business session. This year, we (I’m one of them) approved a resolution that makes a strong statement about the dangerous work behind the reporting on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s called "Honoring Efforts by Indigenous Staff in War Zones"

Here’s a snippet:

"Whereas, Iraqi and Afghan citizens have come forward to work with American news organizations, and

"Whereas these individuals have provided invaluable service as reporters, photographers, interpreters, translators, drivers and ‘fixers’ and…"

The resolution asks U.S. news organizations to send copies to "past and present indigenous staff, both in war zones and in exile."

We’ll try to get the full text posted shortly after the convention, if not sooner.
