The Journal-isms™ Roundtable is
a dinner group of more than 50 current and former journalists\, authors an
d editors that meets every month\, usually at Sunday brunch but sometimes
on a Tuesday. Since 1999\, the group\, led by Journal-isms™ founder and j
ournalist Richard Prince and veteran journalists
Paul Delaney\, Betty Anne Williams and the late Walt Swanston-NuevaEspana\, have hosted
journalists\, newsmakers and other personalities to have lively\, informat
ive and provocative conversations over good food and drink. Ivan R
oman later joined the organizing team.
\n
“Cuba: Vic
tim\, Villain or Both?”
\n
Cuba has consistently been denoun
ced by press-freedom and human rights groups as a repressive country that
persecutes independent journalists\, Black and white alike. Yet it holds a
fascination for some journalists who visit\, find community in the rich c
ulture\, especially of Afro-Cubans on the island\, and come back to the Un
ited States to denounce the U.S. embargo with public thanks from Cuba’s ru
lers.
\n
How do we reconcile these two views of Cuba?
\n
With a
translator to help navigate\, we will discuss this with:
\n
\n- Serafin Moran\, Afro-Cuban journalist who won exile in the United States
\n- Rocio Baro\, Afro-Cuban native who is directo
r of communications for “Fondo de Arte Joven\,” a platform that supports y
oung Cuban artists in music and visual arts. She is in the U.S. as a Huber
t H. Humphrey Fellow at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communi
cation
\n- Dagmar Thiel\, CEO of Fundamedios < https://www.fundam
edios.org/>\, who in 2021 moderated and helped organize National Press
Club Forum\, “Latin American Press Under Siege
\nDarcy Borrero Batista\, journalist and human rights defender. Sh
e was part of a cross-border investigation in 19 countries\, including Cub
a\, “Violence During Quarantine\,” which just won a One World Media Award.
\n\n- She wrote on LinkedIn\, “WE WON:) all Cubans… especially the m
ore than 1000 women who\, as a result of this research\, raised their voic
es to tell their birth experiences. I celebrate for them [including my mot
her] and for us authors\, especially for those who created the enormous pr
oject that is Partos Rotos. Thank you for inviting me to collaborate! Cuba
n journalism is celebrating despite censorship\, intimidation\, harassment
and exile. Congratulations to all!”
\n
\n\n- Mónica Baró Sánchez<
/b>\, Cuba native who is in a master’s program in literary reportage at Ne
w York University. She is described as “Award-winning reporter and writer
trained in an authoritarian regime and strongly committed to freedom of ex
pression\, international standards of journalism\, rigor\, beauty\, and th
e search for truth.” One of her stories\, “Salem\, the young
influencer imprisoned in Villa Marista”
\n
\n
Others to be
announced.
\n
Cuba has been in the consciousness of many Americans at

every presidential election in which the Cuban American vote has been par
t of the story.

DESCRIPTION:Covering the 2024 election when the future of democracy is on t

Webinar 2 p.m. EDT\, Monday\, April 8\nRegister for the free webinar HERE
\nThis November\, the U.S. will hold one of the most consequential electio
ns in its history. One candidate challenged the results of the 2020 electi
on\, helped gin up support for the January 6 insurrection\, and has no qua
lms about what he’d do if re-elected in 2024. He’s suggested using the Jus
tice Department to go after his political enemies\, weakening protections
for a nonpartisan civil service\, and using an 1807 law to send in U.S. tr
oops to police unrest in cities. This year\, writes journalism professor J
ay Rosen\, the election must be about “not the odds\, but the stakes.”\nTh
is election and its potential consequences cannot be left to big media out
lets. Despite extensive coverage of what’s at stake by the New York Times\
, Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, NPR and network news outlets\, surveys
in some key swing states reveal that two-thirds of voters are not aware of
these threats. That’s not surprising\, since polls show that Americans te
nd to trust local media more.\nThat means it will be up to hundreds of rep
orters\, freelancers\, and college journalists across the country to cover
the 2024 presidential contest\, as well as down-ballot races\, in a way t
hat informs the public and keeps faith with the SPJ code of ethics\, which
advises: “Search for and report the truth\,” and “Minimize harm.”\nOur tw
o panelists embody the best in our profession. Media critic and author Mar
garet Sullivan\, formerly executive editor of The Buffalo News\, was publi
c editor at The New York Times and a columnist for The Washington Post. Sh

This November\, the U.S. will hold one of the most consequential elec
tions in its history. One candidate challenged the results of the 2020 ele
ction\, helped gin up support for the January 6 insurrection\, and has no
qualms about what he’d do if re-elected in 2024. He’s suggested using the
Justice Department to go after his political enemies\, weakening protectio
ns for a nonpartisan civil service\, and using an 1807 law to send in U.S.
troops to police unrest in cities. This year\, writes journalism professo
r Jay Rosen\, the election must be about “not the odds\, but the stakes.”<
/p>\n
This election and its potential consequences cannot be left to big
media outlets. Despite extensive coverage of what’s at stake by the New Y
ork Times\, Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, NPR and network news outlets\
, surveys in some key swing states reveal that two-thirds of voters are no
t aware of these threats. That’s not surprising\, since polls show that Am
ericans tend to trust local media more.
\n
That means it will be up t
o hundreds of reporters\, freelancers\, and college journalists across the
country to cover the 2024 presidential contest\, as well as down-ballot r
aces\, in a way that informs the public and keeps faith with the SPJ code
of ethics\, which advises: “Search for and report the truth\,” and “Minimi
ze harm.”
\n
Our two panelists embody the best in our profession. Media critic and author Margaret Sullivan\, formerly executive editor of The Buffalo News\, was public editor at
The New York Times and a columnist for The Washington Post. She now writes
a weekly column for the Guardian US\, and is executive director of Columb
ia Journalism School’s Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Secu
rity.
\n
Barton Gellman\, a three-time Pulitzer-priz
e-winner\, and author\, reported for The Washington Post for more than two
decades\, was a staff writer for The Atlantic\, and is now senior advisor
to the Brennan Center for Justice.
\n
They will discuss how journali
sts can address these unprecedented challenges to their craft in a convers
ation you won’t want to miss.
