SPJ-DC board duties

SPJ D.C. Pro Chapter executive board

The executive board shall consist of the chapter president, vice president, secretaries (recording and corresponding) and treasurer, as well as the immediate past president, six directors and, when applicable, the SPJ Region 2 Director and any elected national officer who is a chapter member.

The board shall meet at least nine times a year. Any board member who has three consecutive unexcused absences from regularly scheduled board meetings shall be asked to resign.

Duties of the chapter officers and directors:

President (one-year term): Shall preside at all meetings, shall exercise general supervision over the affairs and activities of the chapter, and shall serve as an ex-officio member of all committees.

Vice President (one-year term): Shall serve as program coordinator for the chapter and, if the president is absent or incapacitated, shall assume the president’s duties.

Recording Secretary (one-year term): Shall keep minutes of all chapter meetings and send records of the proceedings to the executive board.

Corresponding Secretary (one-year term): Shall be the custodian of all Chapter records unless a special officer shall be appointed for that purpose, shall maintain the Chapter roster, including all records and reports on membership enrollment, and shall conduct all correspondence of the Chapter, as required.

Treasurer (one-year term): Shall receive all Chapter funds and payout funds only by direction of the president, and shall make a written monthly financial report to the executive board. Additional duties are spelled out the chapter bylaws and in “SPJ Chapter Finances: Best Practices”.

Directors (two-year term): While not prescribed specific duties, directors are expected to work fully with the board and to select an area or areas of interest on which they would like to focus their efforts. This may include serving on committees or working on projects such as organizing the Hall of Fame Dinner, or serving as a judge for the chapter’s annual DATELINE awards and the national SPJ’s media organizations.
